Skycloak alternatives: when managed Keycloak can't hold your data

What Skycloak is genuinely good at
Skycloak sells managed upstream Keycloak with flat, infrastructure-based pricing ($29–599/mo plus Enterprise) — no per-MAU meter — a detailed security page (dedicated per-customer databases, documented subprocessors, annual pentests), and first login in minutes. For a team that wants Keycloak without the ops and can live on their cloud, the pricing model is refreshingly honest.
What to check if your constraints are harder
- There is no self-hosted option. No on-prem, no BYOC, no air-gap, no installable artifact — their own blog states that when identity data can't leave your infrastructure, a SaaS provider is "off the table by definition." If that's your constraint, this isn't a comparison; it's a category difference.
- The SLA fine print. The homepage says "99.99% uptime SLA"; the SLA page shows contractual SLA and service credits are Enterprise-only — Developer through Business ($29–599/mo) are best-effort. There is no public status page to check either number against.
- Custom code is Enterprise-gated. Uploading your own SPI JARs requires the Enterprise plan; below that you choose from a curated marketplace. If SPI extensibility is why you chose Keycloak, price that in.
- The exit path. Database export starts at the Launch tier, excludes credentials unless explicitly requested, and export files expire after 24 hours. There is no direct database access at any tier. "Export and self-host any time" is the claim; test the runbook before you depend on it.
- Version control. Only the latest patch of each major is retained, upgrades are sequential, and there's no version pinning — a problem under formal change control.
Where keelinfra fits
keelinfra is the option for the buyer Skycloak's model excludes: an Apache-2.0 distribution that installs the whole HA stack — Keycloak, PostgreSQL failover, encrypted backups with PITR, monitoring — on your machines, in ~10 minutes. Your database, your SPIs, your versions (upgrades move when you say so, and every supported path is re-proven nightly in public CI). There is no exit path to audit because your data never entered.
What Skycloak has that we don't: they carry the pager, they hold the compliance certificates, and their trial is a button while ours is three VMs. The full comparison table keeps the score honestly.
Considering the move? The migration service takes you managed-vendor → self-hosted with the cutover rehearsed on a staging copy first.
